When people ask what I do, I sometimes say that I defend the innocent and those who are presumed innocent. Hopefully, it is a subtle reminder about the right to a defense in a free society. The article I have linked here, about an exceptional and dedicated attorney, captures exactly what I mean. Everyone, including those who are poor, mentally ill, and wildly unpopular, deserves the best defense. That does not always mean a not guilty verdict– though we strive for that whenever we are able– nor does it always mean a light sentence. But it does mean aggressive, vigorous representation. I am thankful to live in a country where this is possible, and try to live up to the example of great lawyers like Judy Clarke.
