Finally, some pushback against harsh federal sentences.

Defendants in federal court, particularly those facing drug and gun charges, know all too well how harsh and unfair federal criminal laws can be.  Many defendants plead guilty because the risk of going to trial is so high.  This story from the New York Times illustrates vividly how great the risk can be, and recognizes that finally, there is some effort to reduce the harsh, often mandatory sentences, and the overwhelming pressure to plead guilty even when a defense is available.
